One of the most anticipated and iconic events to happen in a given person’s life – their wedding day. This day in age weddings range in style, scope, and size, and though there are trends and traditions, there’s also a vast freedom. Many couples have the ability to get married anywhere in anyway that suits them. Yet, if we look back in time to the early 1900s, there were much more easily defined trends, styles, and customs.

Glancing at weddings through the ages offers a glimpse into where many of our modern day traditions stemmed from while showing us just how far we’ve come today.

Wedding Trends Throughout Time

1900s

wedding trends - 1900 wedding dressThe early 1900s, a time of industrial revolution, inroads in the women’s suffrage movement, and it was the beginning of the end of the Gilded Age. Wedding dresses during this time often featured an S-shaped corset, which drew the stomach in and pushed the bosom out. This effect was further emphasized by frills on the bodice. Wide, puffy sleeves that tapered into a narrow forearm, called Gigot sleeves, were popular. Most brides wore white, but there were plenty of brides opting to wear other colors such as azure, mauve and pale shades of pink. Other fashion trends were: high waists, high collars, long trains, long gloves and veiled hats.

This was the beginning of weddings becoming grand celebrations. For many, getting married prior to the 1900s was a small, intimate (and serious) family affair. The 1900s brought festive weddings full of music, dancing, and fun. In many wedding photos/portraits of this time, the bride is seen standing behind the groom, who is pictured sitting on a chair.

1910

The decade of pre-WWI into WWI. The Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, leading to a chain of events that led to the war. This was a time of global conflict and chaos, revolutions and war. Yet, love reigns strong regardless, and weddings certainly still took place. Wedding gowns began transitioning to a flowing silhouette shape. Dancing at the wedding reception was widely popular. Phonographs provided music so the guests could dance the turkey trot, tango, and hesitation waltz. Women are becoming increasingly independent, which resulted in women making more decision about their own weddings. There are quite a few wedding portraits from this decade that show the bride sitting in a chair with her husband standing behind her.

1920s

Quite possibly one of the most famous and popular decades in recent history, the roaring 1920s must have been quite the epic time to tie the knot. This was one of the first decades where the mentality shifted to “anything goes.” The jazz age was in full force, and the bridal aesthetic changed dramatically. Short bob-styled hair, boxy, streamlined silhouette shaped dresses took hold, and ornate beading and embroidery was common. Bouquets were enormous, and many brides wore headdresses or cloche hats for their veils. It became popular to be slightly scandalous, and as a result, many brides opted for dresses that showed their ankles. Elopements began rising in popularity during this time as well. As far as wedding receptions went, those with money had extremely lavish and decadent receptions.

1930s

While weddings were experiencing a high note in the 20s, weddings in the 30s were much more somber and stark. Because this was the depression-era, dresses were often made from rayon rather than silk, if a special wedding dress was worn at all. Many women simply wore the nicest dress they owned or chose a style of dress that could be dyed after the wedding and worn daily. For those not suffering the effects of the Depression as greatly, hats were becoming fashionable, rather than veils, and wedding receptions were styled with black and white color palette, faceted mirror glass, crystal chandeliers, etc. all in the style of Art Deco.
